Warner Chappell Music announced today that it has entered into an exclusive worldwide publishing deal for the administration of the catalog for Stone Temple Pilot members Robert DeLeo, Dean DeLeo, and Eric Kretz. The multiplatinum, Grammy-winning group is one of the most commercially successful acts of the 1990s, having sold 40 million records worldwide, placed 16 Top 10 singles on the Billboard rock charts, and earned inclusion on VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock."

“Stone Temple Pilots helped to define a distinct rock sound of a decade through their incredible songwriting and eclectic performances, and we're thrilled to be bringing their catalog back to Warner Chappell Music," said Greg Sowders, Senior Vice President, A&R, U.S., Warner Chappell Music. “Their work has left an impact on American culture that continues to resonate today."

Added WCM President of A&R, U.S., Ryan Press: "There's no overstating the role Stone Temple Pilots played in developing the landmark sound of their era. But it's the quality of their songwriting perhaps more than anything that has stood the test of time."

"The support of Greg, Ryan and the whole team at Warner Chappell means so much to us," said the three members of Stone Temple Pilots. "We're very excited about the future of this creative collaboration."

STP saw six of their albums reach the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart. Their 1992 debut album, Core, released on Atlantic Records, attained RIAA certification of 8x platinum. 1994's Purple hit No. 1 and was ultimately certified 6x platinum. The hard-charging band has sold over 13.5 million albums in the U.S. alone, cementing their legacy as one of the most accomplished and influential rock crews of their generation.

So what does this mean? I've got to rebuy their catalog so that I have the "Warner Chappell" publisher logo variants in my already too expansive collection?

;)

Probably means more remasters and deluxe albums.  Maybe some more live shows getting released.  Maybe another greatest hits album.

It's great news that a big label has an appreciation for STP and their lasting impact on music. Hopefully they will curate high-quality content and continue to release anniversary deluxe packages.

That's what I thought at first, too... But Music Publishing companies like Warner Chappell actually deal with music royalties for commercial use of songs. So like when those Dodge Ram commercials started using ILS last year just after this deal was made, that was Warner Chappell that facilitated the deal.

Unfortunately, Mary signed Scott's part of the catalog with Sony instead of Warner, so that makes it harder for commercial use of full songs... That's why you'll notice a lot of commercials and sports networks are using instrumental clips of the songs, so they don't have to pay a different company for Scott's vocals.

To my knowledge none of this will effect reissues of the albums, since the albums are still part of Atlantic's catalog.
