Thinking about Scott - 3 years later.
« on: December 03, 2018, 05:22:51 PM »

Three years gone.
I miss this dude.
And time flies. Wow - 3 years already!

Anyway, it got me thinking about our various conversations about how his peers felt overall about Scott.
The fantastic music catalog he left behind is so deserving of a tribute yet nothing ever came, and most likely never coming at this point.

If I may compare for a moment. Cornell has a career-spanning box-set that recently came out.
For Chester, Linkin Park released a live album of their last tour.

I guess you can argue that STP gave us Core's reissue, with the promise of more to come, but I can't help but feel like even in death, Scott has been an afterthought in comparison to others.

Scott's choices were his own but Tommy seems sketchy as hell and can rot for all I care.

It's interesting you say this. First of all, I don't know the guy nor the ins and outs of his friendship/relationship with Scott, but I can't help but view him in a negative light. Call it being a scapegoat in the loss of a great artist or what-have-you, but yup, I feel like you do. And I realize that it's arguably unfair, but...

Doug Grean via Facebook on Scott and Mary's Rolling Stone letter after Scott's passing:

"He had his problems. That’s for sure. I acknowledge his mental illness and addiction But he’s dead now. So what can you do. I can tell you that what she wrote is accurate but two things - one , he wasn’t always like that -and two - he was an incredibly sick guy."

There was some doubt here about the validity of Mary's account about how bad off Scott really was the last few years so I guess that puts that to rest.

He also stated that Scott's son Noah came by his studio a few months ago and seems to be doing well so that is good.

Doug also said that he and Scott never talked after he was let go from the band and that he had hoped for a reconciliation after Scott got "sane and sober", but stated that he knew that was a long shot.

Such a sad end to a complicated man.

I recall him walking out in a suit, cigarette in hand, to open STP set at San Diego's Street Scene and they bust out Shine On You Crazy Diamond.  The crowd didn't know what they were seeing but when the set was done hearing people say that was the best show they'd ever seen.......During No4 era.

Or doing the Las Vegas HOB performance.  It was MGD Blind Date promotion so you didn't know who the band was.  Couldn't believe it was STP.  And they were on fire.

I know the songs are great but his performance is what really set them apart for me.

I remember being extremely jealous when I heard STP played that blind MGD show.  If i remember right they still hadn't played any shows in years since cancelling the Tiny Music tour.  It would've BLOWN my mind to see them come walking out with all the doubts about the band surrounding them.

I was there, too. Really cool to see Dancing Days live. Although, correction, this was the SLDD-era, but despite having relapsed on pain meds during that era, the band was still firing nearly on all cylinders, just like they were in the No. 4 era.

This show might be my second favorite full on show of theirs I went to. A year earlier, I caught them, on the barricade, at the Joint in Vegas for those year end shows they did for fans. I caught the second one after Weiland was released because of domestic violence (we later learned it was a fight over meds for a messed up knee). That's probably my favorite STP show. The Street Scene might be 1B for me, even.

The whole show was great. If you remember, Violent Femmes opened and LIVE played next. They were very, VERY good (and Dennis Rodman came out on stage for White, Discussion), and I am a big fan of theirs. I thought maybe STP could't live up. Then they did Shine On... into Vasoline and they stole the mojo right back.

Since I have talked about my 1A and 1B STP shows, 1C is the acoustic show they did in front of Tower Records during the No. 4 era. All of those were extra special for their own reasons.

Pretty much. They played an industry show at the Viper Room in spring, 1999, and then in the summer before the HOB Vegas show they played an "unannounced" gig on borrowed equipment.

I remember reading an interview with Rob around the SLDD time when he said he thought they were probably the tightest live rock act in the world for a while.
