No, this in no way recaptured the magic. It has been gone since SLDD. That feels like the last STP album to me. This album does nothing for me. I like it no more or less than Butterfly. It's fine. However, in no way is this what I listened to STP for. I will likely never listen to this album again.

On the contrary, I hope they play to their strengths and keep doing this. This incarnation of the band shines most on the soft, jazzy material.

Although we haven't heard anything genuinely heavy from them yet. I have a feeling they are going to nail that too.

They are finding their feet, STP2018 was a decent enough start, but clearly they are now gelling as a band, and that is why Perdida is so much better, IMO.

I want them to try something different with every album. Unless they do something way more commercial and electronic (which I honestly wouldn’t mind hearing) that makes them viable in 2020, records won’t sell, so they might as well shake things up.

Go full on jazz, let Rob spearhead a Brazilian influenced album, etc.

I am totally past the point of wanting them to pretend being 25 again and making Core type stuff.

Why can't you make a hard rock album in your fifties? Aerosmith hung in there. The GnR guys. Sammy Hagar.

so they might as well shake things up.

That's exactly why they should make a hard rock album. In the last decade we've gotten two pop albums and an acoustic jazz record out of them. At this point the best way to shake things up would be to do a heavy rock record, something they haven't done since the 90s.

The band likes to say they like to alternate between experimental records and straight-forward rock records. Well they just did a super experimental acoustic record, so following it with a hard rock record would be awesome... And then follow that with another Tiny Music style jazz record.

Grab the hate and drown it out...

I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if STP had been working on material since Jeff got better and all of their dates got cancelled for the year.

I agree, they have to go heavy this time around. They haven't done anything heavy since SLDD. I also feel the only competition really out there is Machine Gun Kelly. My niece is in her first year of college and they are diggin' that man, hot pink guitar and all. To continue to compete w/ bands in the past is not the way I would go, but as always I like to observe outside the box. Jeff better get his mojo on but not hot pink guitar plz. Make it hard rock loud.
