It's got nothing to do with how good Jeff is at songwriting or singing, it is down to what they perceive the audience wants, which is the hits.
They only ever played a handful of songs off Scott's last album with them as well, because they consigned themselves to the nostalgia bin the moment they split up originally. They've been playing hits tours since 2008. They did 5 years of hits tours with Scott fronting them. Same with High Rise, they had 5 songs with Chester, they only played two of them, despite Chester being one of the most famous and capable rock singers in the world (even though I think LP are shit).
I'm just glad they bother to make new music at all. It's more than most bands on the comeback trail do. It's no reflection on Jeff that they choose to play their hits instead, they are an old band playing a style of music that is 20 years out of fashion, they aren't going to suddenly pick up a legion of young fans by playing new tunes.
They are making STP records, not Jeff Gutt records, so the fact he is younger is irrelevant.
