You know it just occurred to me, this album has been out longer than the wait between SLDD and it. Man, it felt like a lifetime between those albums.
I still have a lot of love for this one. At the time I had hopes that this was the start of their "aging" rock career and that maybe they'd put out another 4 albums or so. And then maybe along the way do what Aerosmith did in the 90's by remaining relevant by sort of cementing themselves into the alt rock movement somehow with videos like "Cryin'" and "Amazing".
Their really are some masterful songs on the Peace album too. First Kiss On Mars is easily recognizable as STP all the way and the right environment should have had more traction than Lady Picture Show ever had. The first four tracks could have all been radio rock singles if the marketing was pushed correctly. Take A Load Off is easily an analog to No Way Out but flows better as a rock track.
I'm not making any case that STP I is a top STP album, but in an alternate universe where STP had a proper marketing team and the band was still together as the old guard, STP I would've been a solid resurgence album amidst a larger catalog.
