Yeah, Purple was written in a Chinese character on the front.

The album was named Purple because according to Weiland, "Purple is my favorite color...it's the color of bruises."

ha ha where did you hear him say that ?.. he would say something like that.. i love him even more for that ....

The album certainly isn’t perfect. Some of the songs suffer the same problems as the debut – Silvergun Superman and Big Empty (the first single, a major hit that ended up on the soundtrack to The Crow) are perfectly serviceable numbers, but neither ever really go anywhere or do anything special. During either of these songs you might find yourself twiddling your thumbs through the verses and waiting for things to pick up again. It doesn’t help that they come one after the other either, slowing the album almost to a stop.

yeah...whatever...

Purple IS perfect

I will disagree to the death that Purple had any filler.

The vinyl of this album was colored purple
Yep, and it's beautiful.  But honestly? When I was little and it first came out, my friends and I just referred to it as '12 Gracious Melodies,' because of the back cover.  It wasn't until a good while later we heard some disc jockey on the radio refer to it as purple and thought, "Huh? What the hell is this guy talking about!?!"

because the chinese symbol ('word') on the album's cover means 'purple' in english..and it's no coincidence, STP wanted it to be called Purple obviously, cause they thought it sounded purple...
you know, like some music makes you think about dark colors, and some peaceful church songs might make you think white or something, and STP boys thought purple off of the songs they'd written, and named it like that, but for some reason wanted it to be written in chinese, and asked some cook in a chinese restaurant how the symbol (word) would look in chinese..
You're correct.  Scott, at the Grand Rapids show this year, confirmed that they came about the title because the album sounded "Purple".

it definitely means "are", he just prononces it "er" so it flows with the song
When STP had a cookout after filming the video for the Core single "Plush," Weiland made jerk chicken that was "spectacular," Dean raves.

It might say er, but I'm sure it's are. Not much else it could mean. There or are. I dunno.

I always thought it was ARE too, but a couple of days ago I checked the booklet (after a loooong time :P) and it says "er" in quotation marks, that got me confused.

It has to be as Slither said.

I compared the links provided earlier in the thread and it is not a symbol for Purple, but a design based off of the symbol.

(Thank you for the links)

If you break it up into 3 parts, the top is a horizontal line with four vertical lines.

The middle is an E-looking shape.

The bottom is a T-looking shape.

I agree that it is just a design and not the symbol itself. I was actually considering this for a tattoo myself, but I will probably go a different route.
